Call to Action

February 24, 2023

Please copy and paste the attached letter and send this to your MP.

As one of your constituents I’m asking you to call for the Secretary of State and Lord Chancellor to stop the automatic release of Robert Brown in November 2023, and refer his case for review by the parole board under powers provided to him in Section 132 of the Crime and Policing Act 2022.

Robert Brown was convicted of manslaughter due to diminished responsibility in 2011.  He was given a sentence of 26 years, and is currently entitled to be released in November 2023 after just 13 years.

Robert Brown’s crime was horrendous.  He battered his ex wife, Joanna Simpson, to death within earshot of her young children, using a claw hammer he had concealed in his child’s homework bag.  He then went on to bury her in a 6ft grave and make-shift coffin which had been prepared weeks or months before.  He has been categorised by probation as a Critical Public Protection Case which means ‘those offenders who present the highest risk of serious harm, have a significant national or particularly sensitive profile and who, consequently, present particular difficulties with respect to their supervision’.   And yet he will currently be released into the community.

This must be stopped.  Robert Brown is a dangerous man who presents a danger to any woman he builds a relationship with as well as Joanna’s family and friends.  But in light of concerns raised over recent months with regards to the Probation Service’s ability to effectively monitor offenders, and the devastating murders of Zara Aleena, Terri Harris, her two children, and their 11 year old friend, I, as a member of your constituency, have no confidence whatsoever in the probation service’s ability to properly monitor him and keep the public safe.

The Lord Chancellor has new powers to stop releases of these sorts of prisoners and I urgently request your support to stop another dangerous killer from being free to walk on our streets.
